Microsoft’s Integration of OpenAI with Bing Outpaces Google’s AI Efforts
In the past few years, Google has made significant strides in AI development by designing AI computation hardware, building platforms for developers to test and develop machine learning models, and publishing papers on various AI topics. However, the company has a feudal structure that channels its AI talent into existing major products like Google Assistant, Photos, Maps, etc. In 2018 and 2019, Google released incremental improvements to its products with AI assistance. Meanwhile, OpenAI released GPT-2, a highly advanced text generator, and DALL-E, the first version of a text-to-image model.
In 2022, OpenAI released DALL-E 2 and ChatGPT, a conversational AI model. This caused Google leadership to become anxious and they responded with Imagen, Imagen Video, and MusicLM, but ChatGPT was seen as an existential threat to their products. At the same time, Microsoft invested in OpenAI and secured its partnership.
