We’ve all heard the adage “You never get a second chance to make a first impression,” and there’s good scientific reason for it.

From Dale Carnegie’s iconic “How To Win Friends And Influence People” to modern trends in social psychology, people have long been trying to understand how a single impression gives us insight into someone else’s character.

In this blog post, I’ll be delving into why first impressions have such a lasting impact, by looking at an important concept in psychology: the halo effect.

What is the halo effect ?

The Halo Effect is a cognitive bias that can cause people to judge someone or something, based on one trait they possess. If someone has a positive trait in one area, we may overestimate their abilities in other areas as well. This phenomenon occurs because people tend to search for and remember information that is consistent with their initial impression.

The halo effect can affect the way individuals perceive themselves and others. For example, if we perceive someone as being attractive, we may be more likely to see them as intelligent, kind, and successful, even if there is no objective evidence to support these assumptions. This can lead to a distorted view of oneself and others, and can even perpetuate harmful stereotypes and biases.
