To be one of the best in the world at something, you have to work hard and be obsessed with it. While some people believe that just working 9 to 5 is enough to become great, it is not clear where this belief comes from. Malcolm Gladwell’s theory of 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to become a master is an example of the effort required, but it’s not just the hours that matter — it’s the obsession. The difference between the great and the merely good is the level of obsession that drives them to think about their craft all the time, even at the cost of their own well-being.

Hard work is necessary to change the world. People who have changed the world worked more than a standard 40-hour week because their work was an extension of who they were. The best employees can consistently achieve 40 hours of quality work per week, and the output for most employees is often less than 40 hours, even if they work more than 60 hours.

To achieve remarkable accomplishments, professional athletes must put in a great deal of hard work both on and off the court. This includes taking care of their eating and sleeping habits, spending time in the gym…
